The most common method of body condition scoring in the UK is the 1- 5 scale. Used by many feed companies, The Blue Cross, World Horse Welfare and the British Horse Society it is a fantastic hands on approach to assessing your horses condition and becoming familiar with any changes in their bodies that could be missed by eye. Click the link below to see in depth instructions on how to use the 1-5 scale from the British Horse Society.
Using a weigh tape on a regular basis can help you keep track of your horses progress. Although not 100% accurate they are a good tool in showing you if your horse has gained lost or maintained weight. Used alongside regular BCS you can closely monitor your horse in between our visits. Watch the video linked on how to use a weigh tape correctly.
The Henneke system of body condition scoring is a 1-9 scale which is most commonly used in the USA. Focusing on the same areas as the 1 - 5 scale however has more variation between the numbers. It may be easier to use this method if you prefer more options of your horses body condition. Click the link below to learn more about the Henneke system from Smartpak
I have created some free downloadable items for you to monitor your horses weight and body condition throughout the year. Along with the information sheets on each of the body condition scoring methods. Use one chart for each of the horses in your care.
